> So yes, they do all in own interest, and the EU isn't and wasn't very different.

Of course, what connects Europe and the USA forever is that they think the same in these matters. No one can trust them.

It's funny that people still have any expectation of privacy when using a vm hosted at a place like AWS or Azure... They're giving any and every last bit you have, if the right people ask.

It isn't just aws though. You could say exactly the same about digital ocean or linode.

Even if you have your own rack at a colocation, you could argue that if you don't have full disk encryption someone could simply copy your disk.

I am just trying to be practical. If someone is intent on reading what users specifically send me, they can probably find bad hygiene on my part and get it but my concern is they should not be able to do this wholesale at scale for everyone.

You can have full-disk encryption then. It can still possibly be compromised using more advanced methods like cold boot attacks but they are relatively involved, and is very detectable in the form of causing downtime.

actually, even the CTO of AWS couldn't hijack an abusive VM server because legal did not allow them to, but when the government is asking it I guess that all flies out of the window.

Pretty much as you say. Legal exists within a system of laws. Hypothetically these laws might not have a carve-out for "CTO doesn't like the behavior" but they almost certainly do have a carve-out for "national security reasons". You'll pretty much never find a lawyer advising a client to break the law because it would be more ethical to do so.

who knows how often or what kind of access is/can be given, but we will never know most likely because National Security Letters are almost always accompanied with gag orders

That's why I self host.

The Fed was created EXACTLY to bail out large banks when they inevitably fail due to the nature of their mismanaged business. Don't expect anything different.

You can imagine my opinion on the fed!

The USD is losing purchasing power, that's the implication of all these price changes with respect to pretty much any asset.

again, what's the relevance to an American who makes USD spending in USA?

A share of Microsoft costs an American 16% more today than a year ago, whereas from the perspective of a German a share of Microsoft cost slightly less than a year ago. That's one way to look at it, anyway.

Why would or should an American care how much it costs for a German though?

Because some of the things they buy are imported, or depend on imports.

Unless an American’s income went up by the same amount, they lost purchasing power. The greater the proportion of non-USD assets they have, the greater purchasing power retained (i.e. the wealthy that depend less on selling their labor).

The cost of health insurance (in USD) just went way up.

What does that have to do with the currency difference?

Did you know that drugs are made abroad?

No, the Saudi will sell access to Chinese researchers. It is a very smart move.

Congress is literally acting by providing funding for AI projects in the country.

Stop spreading FUD.

> People outside the project are allowed to say whatever the hell they want

What these people do is a disservice to the general open source community, by spreading misinformation and general FUD about critical software that uses C and C++.

Say goodbye to falling AWS prices. From now on its gonna be higher and higher.

The good thing about AI is that it knows all the hundreds of little libraries that keep popping up every few days like a never-ending stream. No longer I need to worry about learning about this stuff, I can just ask the AI what libraries to use for something and it will bring up these dependencies and provide sample code to use them. I don't like AI for coding real algorithms, but I love the fact that I don't need to worry about the myriad of libraries that you had to keep up with until recently.

what "AI" are you speaking of? all the current leading LLMs i know of will _not_ do this (i.e web search for latest libraries) unless you explicitely ask

I'll sometimes ask Claude Sonnet 4.5 for JS and TS library recommendations. Not for "latest" or "most popular". For this case, it seems to love recommending promising-looking code from repos released two months ago with like 63 stars.
