This writeup sounds a lot like what was happening at CaveDog - Props to Carmack / Id software for publishing the workings of Quake - Our engine AmenEngine also was directly inspired in the same way but didn't work the same in the details. It would be interesting to see how many modern engines have their roots in Quake.
I do it sometimes (even just through the openai playground on platform.openai.com) because the experience is incredible, but it's expensive. One hour of chatting costs around 20-30$.
I started doing this before it was viral - it's basically obvious and I'm sure many people simultaneously did it since it was so obvious and easy to do - I even have the same tech combination.
I did this on my own without reading any of these articles - I already had a terminal program on my Android phone and was already using Tailscale for shared projects in Ghidra so... Maybe it's just a path of least resistance.
