This was obvious from the start just looking at their refugee numbers and the fact that they didn't have enough experience with immigration.

This whole thing is a bit of a mindfuck for me because I can't find any logical reason for what Sweden has done. I think the government has actually acted out of pure humanity and accepted so many refugees without thinking through any of it and now they're paying the price.

Compare that with Canada who picks and chooses their immigrants and has a 100-year outlook on the future of their demography.

I hope you don't think they're that stupid. nobody is, they did it and they keep doing it to make more "liberal Muslims", who are just like most Christians today, atheists who don't care really about anything related to the religion itself, they just keep repeating their prayers because they find peace in it, not because they care about God or his commandments or going to heaven.

One could argue from Finnish immigrant population in Sweden that they had experience with immigration. But it was entirely different type of immigration. Skilled trained workers with outside language near same ethnicity and similar cultural background.

It is just that later groups were different. Not that certain ones like Vietnamese haven't integrated well enough without too many issues.

Honestly I find 4chan much less toxic than Twitter in practice. Like I can find some of the most horrible, infuriating and potentially illegal content on Twitter whereas on 4chan it's relatively rare depending on the board and the occasional shooting that gets posted on there first or whatever.

Same story here. I was a ThinkPad user and bought my first Mac when the M1 was released. It just felt dumb to get anything else even when compared on paper.

I'm happy with my purchase but I'm still not a fan of Apple and their philosophy in any way. If there was a real competitor to the M1, I would switch in a heartbeat.

I moved to Tutanota and what I did is forward all my Gmail emails to my Tutanota email. It made it much easier to switch because I could immediately start using Tutanota and then migrate my accounts overtime to eventually delete Google completely.

I observed this as a kid and still experience it these days.

Never even questioned whether it was true because it felt so incredibly obvious that the ISP was dethrottling whenever they detected a speed test.

Sounds like a good way to create even more cults of personality and egotistical assholes who can't work in a team.

Breakthroughs aren't made by lone geniuses anymore. We just have that superhero fetish eg. picture of black hole where credit was practically given to that one woman in the picture.

Breakthroughs were rarely made by lone geniuses even before. Sure, there are some, but even Edison had a huge lab full of people doing the work.

Bell labs was extremely successful (at least on the innovation front) not due to lone geniuses, but due to a large collection of very smart people all collaborating together.

Not everyone who dislikes working in a team is an "egotistical asshole". Some of us are just neurodivergent and have social anxiety.

As an outsider looking at Twitter I think they're fooling themselves if they think the problem is lack of free speech.

When I click a Twitter link what I usually see are: - bots and spam - low quality replies that add nothing (usually from bimbos or 3rd worlders trying to get the attention of a celebrity) - shallow one liners to an idea that people don't like

As much as upvotes were made fun of, I think Reddit had the right idea because at least the upvoted posts were almost guaranteed to be of "readable" quality. And if you wanted to, you could easily sort the thread by most controversial and read the unpopular opinion.

Now Reddit is a website where free speech is actually lacking with shadow bans and slightly controversial posts getting removed.

I know this is probably naive thinking but I don't understand how we can have so much land and still have unaffordable homes and concentrated populations.

Exactly: it's the policy, it's captured by for-profit industrial complexes - and if you want to get into deeper conspiracy hypothesis, it's also foreign influence laundering $100s of billions into our real estate market, not only buying up/owning our most valuable land and properties, but at the same time making the costs of every Canadian go up and quality of life going down - making us weaker as a society, and more vulnerable to takeover; there's a whole book written on this called "Wilful Blindness: How a Network of Narcos, Tycoons and CCP Agents Infiltrated the West" by Sam Cooper; Canada is one of the richest countries in the world, resource and spring water wise with our lakes, and especially per capita with only 38 million population - we're a prime target, rich and relatively easy, and our systems are clearly captured.

Most of the land is useless and completely unviable for building anything. Seriously.

Almost all of British Columbia is mountain. We flooded many of the river valleys for hydro power in the 1950s. Can't build on the side of the mountain that easy.

Huge swathes of Canada are muskeg bog and tundra. etc.

IMO British Columbia is way under-developed. There is literally 15 or so Switzerlands worth of some of the most beautiful and desirable real estate North of Vancouver that could be developed in similar way to the cities in the Swiss Alps. The Okanogan is not really all that mountainous but is basically unpopulated, etc.

Funny thing about the Okanagan is that given that it's pretty much the only land in Canada where you can make decent red wine, a lot of that land is more worthwhile for agriculture than housing.

Feel bad for the farmers that happened to be born on the wrong side of the border in the US side of the valley. In the USA there's heaps of places where wine can be made and their land isn't worth anywhere nearly as much.

Cause we don't build homes.

My dream laptop is something with the performance of the M1 but with the modularity and freedom of old ThinkPads.

I'm just hoping that by the time I stop using this M1 laptop there will be alternatives because there's really nothing I like about Apple other than their SoC.

I switched to Tutanota for email and calendar and it has been surprisingly flawless.

To make the transition easier I started by forwarding all Gmail emails to Tutanota and I've been slowly updating my accounts to the new email. The plan is to eventually delete my Google accounts completely.
