There is some first mover advantage, but in the long run, it's true--no one will care who was first. Apple has a good shot at a general consumer platform, not so much for gaming. Microsoft or Valve/Steam has a shot at gaming, and maybe Sony. For business, MS again has a shot as does Meta. HP can access some parts of it but I can't say they have good experience in delivering the software part of a platform.
