Ask HN: Has anyone ever seen a UFO?

Sighting a UFO in Sydney, Australia during the 80s:

I was playing with my friend Lucas when I spotted a silver disc floating in the air. It was shaped like the classic, stereotypical image of a UFO that we often think of today. At that time, as kids, we had no clue as to what it could be.

It was 2x the size of the moon and remained stationary. Despite being too young to understand what a UFO was, I remember the experience vividly. The UFO I saw as a child had no lights, no aliens, no noise, and no incredible speeds. It was not the kind of exciting event that would thrill a child.

We informed Lucas' mother, who then rang up his uncle, who was a pilot. However, he was unable to identify the object. At the time, the experience was not particularly exciting for me as I didn't have a concept of what a UFO was, and so we simply continued playing.

Later, when we looked up again, the object had vanished. I'm afraid that's it!

I'm familiar with two Joe Rogan episodes with people that have seen UFOs, or at least their stories seem very believable.

#1315 with Bob Lazar (scientist that worked reverse-engineering UFO propulsion tech for US military in 1980s): https://open.spotify.com/episode/7Gg4Qi578G5SXoEtaLVVpx

and #1883 Ryan Graves (was the first active duty pilot to publicly disclose regular sightings of Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon): https://open.spotify.com/episode/68t6BZRHenCslyLLaviW1H

I found this perspective on the Bob Lazar story to be extremely compelling:

Spoiler: he's basically full of crap. And the "UFOs" were particle beams meant to spoof radar systems.

Thanks for the link. It's a pretty hard read, I wish the author would have done some editing. It's unstructured speech interspersed with cursing. I only skimmed it, but might come back to it in the future. If Lazar is lying though, he's a world-class liar (and he's a world class failure at making money off it).

Btw, found this episode #1853 with Jeremy Corbell about UFOs; it's pretty fascinating as well: https://open.spotify.com/episode/0gYVutFOYsHaklxO0DLcS7

Yes. Then I whipped out my nokia 3310 to film it and while filming I shaked a lot so I kept the quality desired by the community.

I was woken up by pulsating lights, and saw a small round object floating through my room. It came closer and closer and touched me, it did something to my mind, changed it somehow. For a week afterwards, I could point at the ground and hairs would sprout, then I could move my finger around and they would follow. That ability faded away but since then I've been able to see auras in people and in cats.

I didn't see it in person, but the lights over Phoenix were witnessed by many people.

Kurt Russell has a story about it. https://youtu.be/RVffyAF3wz8?t=85

UFO no, but close enough, sort of.. ~10 years ago; i was trying to sleep, and something bothered me enough to open my eyes, and i saw 2 orbs that were emitting an aura and flying in the middle of my room, i don't remember what happened next, but since that day i feel like i got the ability to know things i shouldn't know

Perhaps it was ball lightning? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ball_lightning

Indeed, that's what I thought as well.

The eponymous book by Cixin Liu is also not bad.

I had an experience where I was absolutely convinced aliens were in my room keeping me from moving with something meant to hold my body still.

But I’m pretty sure it was sleep paralysis

What things do you know fella

I took a series of photos of a group of them flying on the side of the plane I was on

Could you link the photos?

Summer 2013 traveling Amtrak up the coast from San Diego to LA. Off the coast not far from San Onofre plant I saw a small silver disc darting around at incredible speeds in the distance.

Never, wish I could see someday. One of my friends did see a ball lighting which is fancy enough.

I think so
