There was a big story some time ago where the IRS was attempting to push for ID.me login only and remove the ability to use their email-based login, but then they backed down.

If you attempt to sign in to e.g pay estimated taxes though... it now looks like they did indeed remove it and you're forced to create an ID.me account.

I don't see this covered anywhere unfortunately but it's very frustrating to see.
