Ask HN: How do you encrypt your software for business customers?
2 points by Kelteseth on Sept 5, 2023 | hide | past | favorite
Hi all, we currently use the CodeMeter [1] USB hardware dongle to protect our software. This now worked for us when selling to domestic customers. We want now expand to the international marked and this would be a major headache sending pre-programmed USB keys across the globe and back. We develop a sewer management software, written in C++. Now my boss thinks real hardware encryption is the only way to stay save, but IMHO that a bit overkill. So my question to you are:

1. What kind of protection do you use for your business partners for software that does run on their pc?

2. Any experiences with alternatives to wibu?

3. Would you agree that having such a cumbersome onboarding process will hinder adaption?

4. Wibu also offers a software encryption, and we are thinking about this solution. Are there any FOSS projects that also offer security by obscurity?
