Normally the Hacker News thread has higher quality posts than Reddit but I thought this reddit thread has good comments including from someone on the Immich team

Yeah, that's a good question.. If it was philantrophy, wouldn't the one funding it want at least some publicity?
When I see companies that are "magically funded" like this there's always one thing that comes to my mind - a nation state.
