Do you really think so? In my experience most people just want to live their lives, do their thing. I don't think people would be fighting each other as much if it wasn't for the constant "see what these people/nations/terrorists are doing" reporting in the media.
Would they? They can charge a 25% markup across the board for stuff going to Russia, and the price they pay is losing out on access to European and US markets.
Depending on what they're selling they either don't care, aren't big dogs in those markets, or can just create a new shell company to avoid the sanctions.
The Russian market economy is very small. Smaller than France or Germany. This has been analyzed before and the conclusion is that China over produces, and they need a lot more the US and European market than Europa and the US needs China.
Agree. Also, the reason China exports so much is that encouraging export manufacturing is the most efficient way Beijing has to increase the economic prospects of the average young Chinese man. They care about that because if the prospects of the average Chinese young man stagnates, Beijing runs a serious risk of losing control of the country through riots and various revolutionary social movements as has happened many times in Chinese history.
In summary, it is a weakness in Chinese society (along with the fact that Washington has been co-operative at least until recently) that is the underlying cause of why China exports so much.
> How does that help existing Apple owners in Russia?
Existing Apple owners in Russia intentionally bought a hyper-expensive phone with no side-loading. They had 99 options and of those they selected the one that costs a significant multiple of a monthly salary.
> Wouldn't it be better if all phones had side loading capability by default?
No, because I want to buy a phone that doesn't have side loading capability by default, so I choose Apple phones.
The more doors you build into a system, the more likely someone is to use one of them with ease, maliciously.
Tacit rule for Hacker News: when Mozilla, Microsoft or Google do x, it is characteristically bad and going to destroy their stock overnight. When Apple does x, it's actually a really good feature or smart administrative decision that their competitors could never hope to match.
Rinse and repeat until you reach the "but ALL companies are bad then!" point. And we call ourselves "Hacker" news...
