Religious icons are generally more Eastern than Western. I believe Warhol went to an Eastern Catholic church.
It's not possible for someone not to worship something, the only freedom we have is what we choose to worship. His soup cans show us that we can worship or idolize anything.
To make that last paragraph a bit easier to follow, substitute "worship" with give attention to. We give our devoted attention to many things. We are also mostly negatively manipulated about attention. i.e. "the attention economy"
